Tips on trend searching

Regardless of whether you are looking for inspiration or wish to keep an eye on your industry and the market setting – with our trend search, you will always find relevant and cross-industry trends from around the world and maintain a broader perspective.

To find trends that match your particular concern, a targeted search is a good idea. You can either run a full-text search or use various filters for specializing the search. Using the filters gives you the advantage of being able to discover new areas and become aware of relevant trends that may not otherwise have come to your attention. If you are specifically looking for trends on a special topic and use the full-text search for this purpose, we recommend you to expand your search for trends on this topic to get the broadest range of information possible on the latest relevant developments. The best approach when searching for relevant trends mainly depends on the intention of your search.

Inspiration

When searching for inspiring content, your search need not be too focused as you should also cast an eye over new trends emerging across various industries.

To include cross-industry trends in the search results, we recommend you to reassess the topic in order to prevent missing out on any promising potential that you could adapt to your processes and targets. To get more search terms for the full-text search, it could also be a good idea to create a word cloud. Word clouds offer you a practical and visual overview of the entire topic area and all its various facets. To create a word cloud, you ask yourself the following questions, for which we have provided some answers using the example of “Product innovation: wristwatch”:

What words come to your mind about your topic? How can desired functions / added values be described in other words? time display, stop watch, tracking, data, communication medium, health tracking, organizer, jewellry, smart watches, receive messages
What is your intention? Why are you looking for exactly this topic?evaluate technical possibilities, design optimization
Can further problems be derived from the goal, which you can use as a basis for your search terms? Digitalisation as a challenge, opening up new sales markets -> using new advertising channels (social media)

Exemplary word cloud:

Industry and market overview:

To search for the latest developments and impulses from your industry or market setting, use the industry filter. The line “Micro-Trends” shows you the latest innovations in the industry. (The line “Macro-Trends” shows you which macro-trends primarily influence the industry.)

Topic, trend and technology search:

If you are specifically looking for information and developments in a certain topic area or for a particular technology, you can limit the search results with the mega-trend filter / limit the search with the trend filter. Choose the mega-trend that matches your search area. After selecting the mega-trend that covers your area of interest, you can also choose from a list of related macro-trends to deepen your search even further.

To learn more about a special topic area, you can use the full-text search to get more information on relevant trends from other industries and developments that could well be transferred to your own company or market.
